Mission

Unraveling Fashion explores the powerful connection between art, fashion, and culture, past and present. By breaking down the symbolism found in paintings, clothing, and iconic cultural moments, from ancient goddesses to the Met Gala, we uncover how visual culture shapes the way we see ourselves and each other, especially when it comes to representations of femininity.

Through creative, accessible workshops designed for younger students, we make fashion history and cultural storytelling exciting and relevant. Participants learn to decode the messages in what we wear, understand the deeper stories behind style, and create their own fashion-inspired pieces that reflect who they are.

We believe that when you understand the meaning behind what you wear, you gain the power to express yourself – and to change the conversation.

About the Founder

I’m Marlowe, and I am a high school student in the Bronx, NY. I am really interested in both fashion and art history and launched this project to explore and deepen my understanding in both. I love exploring self expression through clothing. I also am incredibly interested in the history behind it. I also love art history and learning about the nuances in great works of art.

Through this project I want to explore both of these passions and develop a deeper understanding of the symbolism behind popular culture phenomenons. This summer, I took a course in fashion styling at FIT and attended fashion week events. Last year I took Renaissance Art History and am currently in an Art History class on Imagination and Fantasy. My favorite ways to find fashion inspiration in the city are people watching, social media, and Vogue.

Our Workshops

Our hands-on workshops are designed for middle school students interested in learning and understanding more about this intersection of art history and fashion. By examining the history of these popular culture moments, students will learn the impact that clothing has on history and culture. Each workshop includes an activity where students can apply what they have learned in a fun, creative, and hands-on way.
